Kemani Jackson

What is the name you go by + where are you from? "My name is Kemani Jackson and I'm from Boston."

What kind of photographer/what do you do as a photographer?

"I'm a Portrait and Fashion photographer, my goal is to transition into Documentary style"

When did you start your journey with photography? How did you start?

"Photography wasn't initially my purpose and passion in life. It was acting and computer science but at the time in college, I was doing some modeling gigs and I needed some pictures for headshots. So I kept bothering people if they knew any photographers to the point where my friend told me to just to buy a camera myself. After that I got the camera, I fell in love with it and kept shooting, it evolved to what it is now"

What is something you feel that people don’t see behind the scenes?

"The plannings of the shoot and the editing process, it can be stressful sometimes, and people be trying to rush you. I try to be as visually different as I can, I try to be new and unique as possible."

Do you do anything else you would like to share? What do you do in your free time?

"I like to read on my spare time, I like to draw as well as educating myself on various topics."

What are some accomplishments you’ve done during your journey? What are some challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?

"Some of my accomplishments so far is that I got four shots on Vogue Italia. I also got published on two different magazines which were big highlights because I never thought I get anything published so soon. Some of my challenges has been trying to stay consistent and out doing the previous shoots as well as trying to be visually different not being like other photographers. The best way I've been able to overcome is not giving, up continuously shooting in different elements as well locations, trying stuff spontaneously learning how to network and grow with creators."

What are some advice you’d like to give to photographers like you?

"My advice would be keep shooting, don't stop even when you're having self doubt. Another thing do not compare your work to other photographers, they're at different points in their careers so just focus on perfect your craft."

Kemani's message to you! "I haven't been active for awhile because I like to be mysterious and work at my own pace but 2021 I have some big things coming."
